With Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson expected to be off the draft board by San Francisco's pick at No. 3, Jones-Drew has Shanahan and general manager John Lynch selecting Justin Fields of Ohio State. On Wednesday, the two 49ers decision-makers will head to Columbus, Ohio, to watch the former Buckeye throw in a workout that will feature drills and throws straight from Shanahan's practices.
"Fields is a perfect quarterback for Kyle Shanahan's system," wrote Jones-Drew. "With blazing speed and a big-time arm -- which will be on display Wednesday in a second pro day workout -- Fields is a guy who'll move the pocket and make this offense much more explosive than it is with Jimmy G."
Fields (6-3, 228) appeared in eight games for Ohio State last season, completing 70.2 percent of his passes for 2,100 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions while adding five rushing touchdowns, per Sports Reference. That followed up a 2019 campaign that saw him throw 41 touchdowns and run for 10 more while throwing just three interceptions.
Next week, Shanahan and Lynch are scheduled to travel to Fargo, North Dakota, to watch former NDSU quarterback Trey Lance throw. He is also likely to be an option for San Francisco at No. 3.
In his mock draft, Jones-Drew has the New England Patriots trading up to the No. 7 pick to select Mac Jones. Two picks later, the analyst has Lance landing with the Washington Football Team, who trade up to grab the former Bison.
