Shanahan and Lynch hope to catch up with Fields later. The duo was in Tuscaloosa to watch Mac Jones at Alabama's pro day.
"We talked to (agent) Dave Mulugheta the other day, and he said that they'd be able to set up another [workout for Fields]," Shanahan told reporters on Monday. "That's why we chose Alabama. I'm excited to see him eventually in person. I've also got a lot of tape to go off too. I know he's going to throw it really good in person and be really fast in person also."
Jones called Shanahan a "mastermind" after his workout. It sounds like Fields has the same level of respect for the 49ers head coach and would welcome a chance to call the Bay Area home.
Shanahan previously met Fields years ago while working with the QB Collective.
"Just going back to the QB Collective, I remember coach Shanahan being a great coach, a great quarterback coach in terms of emphasizing keeping that base in the pocket," Fields said after his pro day via NBC Sports Bay Area.
"He's a great offensive-minded coach and arguably one of the best coaches in the league. It's just an honor and a blessing to be in that position to be looked at by them, so I'm just grateful."
With Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson expected to be the first two quarterbacks drafted, almost certainly with the top two selections, that likely leaves three top prospects in play for San Francisco. They are Fields, Jones, and North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.
Last week, the 49ers traded up from the No. 12 pick to No. 3 overall to ensure they can secure their quarterback of the future.
