"I just found out about [Aiyuk's injury] today," Shanahan said. "I know he told the trainers he thought he did it on the third play the game, on his drop that he had there. So, we didn't know much about it because he just respatted it, but the way it swelled up, he came in and said it hurt worse than he thought and we just got an MRI and found out about the high ankle."
The 49ers will also be without tackle Trent Williams, who suffered a sprained elbow. Shanahan noted that no surgery would be required.
The coach didn't rule out Jimmy Garoppolo but indicated that the quarterback is trending in a direction that will render him unlikely to play.
"I haven't talked to the doctors about Jimmy today," Shanahan said. "I know we plan on the same plan this week. I would be shocked if it's changed. If it has, then we'll give him the chance, but according to last week, it's not going to change."
Added Shanahan: "Jimmy's handled [the situation] well. That's why he has a chance to come back this week, but until the doctors give us the go, we're not going to."
San Francisco also placed two players — center Hroniss Grasu and long snapper Taybor Pepper — on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The good news is that two others, running back Austin Walter and fullback Josh Holkit (practice squad), have been activated off of the COVID-19 list.
Shanahan provided the following additional injury updates:
- DT Javon Kinlaw is day-to-day with a knee injury.
- DE Dion Jordan is day-to-day with a knee injury.
- S Tarvarius Moore is day-to-day with an ankle sprain.
- WR Deebo Samuel will not play against Seattle due to a hamstring injury.
- CB Richard Sherman will not play against Seattle due to a calf injury.
- OL Justin Skule is day-to-day with a knee sprain.
- S Jimmie Ward is still in the concussion protocol.
- CB K'Waun Williams is "good to go" after suffering a shin contusion.
- DE Jordan Willis will not play against Seattle due to a high-ankle sprain.
- RB Jeff Wilson is "good to go" after suffering a stinger.
