New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is 7-1 against quarterbacks he drafted or have started for him.
Belichick hopes to make it 8-1 this weekend when the Patriots host Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers. What does Shanahan think about Belichick's record against his former quarterbacks?
"I hear you, but Bill's going to make sure he covers everybody and makes it hard for Jimmy," Shanahan said. "When people aren't open, that's hard for any quarterback. If people aren't open, and you can't have a run game, then I don't care what your quarterback's going to do, unless he just runs around and basically makes plays scrambling, which is extremely hard.
"So, that stat definitely is a little daunting, but when you're one of the best coaches of all time, and when you are the best coach of all time, and you have the best quarterback of all time in your second year as a head coach, give me any stat, whether it's at home, on the road, whether it's the AFC East, and I bet you that winning percentage is close to what you just gave me."
Murphy did correct Shanahan on one thing — the coach's statement that Belichick had the best quarterback of all time. The KNBR host noted that Joe Montana never played for Belichick.
"That's true," Shanahan responded. "You're right. Thank you for getting me on that. Arguably the best. The best in terms of what I've studied. That's what I'll say."
