Of course, the 49ers are being cautious with their franchise quarterback. This is a long season, and the team doesn't want to do anything that will hurt its chances in the long-run.
General manager John Lynch joined KNBR on Thursday and provided an update on Garoppolo. From what was said, it sounds like the quarterback's progress is headed in the right direction.
"I think Jimmy has done a really good job on this rehab, just like he does (with everything)," Lynch said on the Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "He's a very hard worker. He's been very intent on being out there as soon as possible. It's hurt him not to be out there. The good news is he's been out there. Now, we're through two days of practice, and he's been out there both days.
"I always think it's a positive step when you practice Wednesday, and you come back feeling a little better on Thursday. That's typically a good sign when you don't regress. Instead, you're making progress. And I think that was the case today."
Garoppolo has missed the last two games after sustaining an ankle injury against the New York Jets during a Week 2 matchup at MetLife Stadium. Nick Mullens started in Garoppolo's place during Week 3 against the New York Giants and played well. However, Sunday night was a different story as the ineffective Mullens was benched late in the game for C.J. Beathard.
"The other guys (Mullens and Beathard) are getting reps as well, so we'll see," Lynch continued. "Kyle (Shanahan) will make that decision, along with our medical staff, as to where exactly Jimmy is at. I think there's been a lot of positive signs, but you've got to make sure that everything's right.
"The Dolphins, all these teams, these are big men coming after the quarterback, and that's their job. So you have to be able to move, perform, and be capable of keeping yourself healthy. All those things will go into the evaluation, but there's been some good signs this week."
