The San Francisco 49ers have named running back JaMycal Hasty as their protected practice squad player ahead of the team's Week 3 matchup against the New York Giants, according to NBC Sports Bay Area. That is a good indication that the 49ers may activate him for the game with Raheem Mostert (knee) and Tevin Coleman (knee) expected to be sidelined due to injuries.


In addition to increasing NFL practice squads to 16 players this season, teams can protect four of those players each week from being signed to other rosters. NFL teams can also elevate practice squad players to the active roster up to 90 minutes before kickoff.


Hasty will return to his unprotected status after Sunday's game, and the 49ers will have until next Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT to declare up to four new (or repeat) players to protect.

Hasty signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on April 27 after playing college football at Baylor.

The 49ers are also bringing in several running backs for tryouts, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. They include Paul Perkins, Karan Higdon, and Austin Walter.
