San Francisco initially signed Gray as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota in 2013, but he did not make the final roster for that season. The tight end spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, and Miami Dolphins.
Gray has caught 27 passes for 378 yards in his five NFL seasons between 2013 and 2017. He did not play the last two seasons after landing on injured reserve on September 6, 2018, due to a torn Achilles tendon. Gray required additional surgery last year, forcing him also to sit out the 2019 season.
The 49ers worked out former CFL offensive lineman Dakoda Shepley this week and announced his signing to a one-year deal. That move was first reported by Justin Dunk of 3DownNation.
The New York Jets signed Shepley (6-4, 310) as an undrafted free agent out of the University of British Columbia in 2018, but he was released later that offseason. The Roughriders made him the No. 5 overall pick in the 2018 CFL Draft.
To make room on the roster, the 49ers have waived offensive lineman Kofi Amichia and veteran tight end Erik Swoope. San Francisco initially signed Amichia on December 11, 2019. He was re-signed on February 5. Swoope was signed this past week.
