The San Francisco 49ers, along with the Dallas Cowboys, were "believed" to be among the teams involved in trade discussions for Jamal Adams before the New York Jets sent the All-Pro safety to the division-rival Seattle Seahawks, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.


And boy, did the Seahawks have to give up a lot to pry him away from the Jets.


In addition to safety Bradley McDougald, Seattle sent a first-round pick in 2021, another first-rounder in 2022, and a third-round pick in 2021. Plus, at some point, the Seahawks will need to give Adams the long-term contract he desires, making him the highest-paid safety in football.

The move was likely at least partially motivated by San Francisco's dominant play last season. The two teams split their regular-season series, but the 49ers narrowly won the Week 17 matchup at CenturyLink Field, winning the NFL West in the process.


Fowler's report is the first potential confirmation of a rumor by a Sports Illustrated writer earlier this month that San Francisco "had preliminary discussions" with the Jets about the disgruntled defender. The 49ers, along with the Seahawks and Cowboys, were among the teams Adams mentioned as desirable trade destinations.

Now, San Francisco will have to face Adams at least twice a year moving forward. While the move does potentially create a fluctuation in the balance of power within the NFC West, the addition came at a high cost for Seattle.
