Neither Peter Schrager nor Michael Robinson said on Good Morning Football on Monday that they feel there is a trust issue between Shanahan and Garoppolo, with any talk often being overblown.
"I don't see it that way," Schrager said. "I see it as: Trusts him just fine, and in their biggest moments in the regular season, it was Jimmy Garoppolo's arm that got the job done."
Shaun O'Hara, however, isn't so sure, noting that there are two types of trust. One is trusting that a player knows what he needs to do in a situation, and the other is believing that he can go out and do it.
"I think that's where there may be a little bit of [an issue]," O'Hara said. "I know Jimmy Garoppolo knows what to do. I know he knows where to go with the football. Do I 100 percent trust that he can do it? I think Jimmy has shown that he can make those throws. But let's be honest, the throw that has haunted Jimmy G, and will continue to haunt him, is that overthrow in the Super Bowl. It's a completely different narrative about Jimmy G and about Emmanuel Sanders and the 49ers right now if they make that throw."
O'Hara goes on to reflect on the relationship that Shanahan had with Matt Ryan while serving as the Atlanta Falcons' offensive coordinator. That relationship took time and is something still developing between Shanahan and Garoppolo.
"[Shanahan and Ryan] were finishing each other's sentences," O'Hara said. "They were like stepbrothers. They wanted to go do karate in the garage. They were building bunk beds. That's the type of relationship I think he has with Jimmy G. Now, Jimmy G just has to find a way to go out and prove it and make that big-time throw."
