Trent Williams is excited to be out of Washington after differences in opinions seemingly made the relationship unrepairable. A trade during Day 3 of the draft reunited Williams with his first NFL offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, who is now his head coach with the San Francisco 49ers.

Williams, who joined KNBR on Thursday, doesn't anticipate the transition from Washington to San Francisco being too challenging. After all, he already has a lot of familiarity with the offense.


"It's pretty much exactly the same," Williams told Greg Papa and John Lund. "When you talk about a playbook and a coach, it's almost like that's their recipe, their cookbook. That generally travels."

Williams spent four seasons working within Shanahan's playbook in Washington. Much of it remains entrenched in his brain.

"Luckily, I cut my teeth with Kyle," Williams continued. "That was the first playbook I ever learned, so it's kind of just instilled in my mind. I was delighted to know it was all the same terminology. It's pretty much all the same.

"There's a couple of nuances here and there. In game plans, you kind of tweak things here and there, so there will be some new things to catch on to, but the bulk of what I need to know is the same."

Williams is eager to get back on the football field and meet his new teammates. Of course, that won't happen until concerns surrounding the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic diminish.


The offensive lineman is entering the final year of his contract and is hopeful that his play this season will help keep him with Shanahan and the 49ers beyond 2020.
