Teammates backed Jimmy Garoppolo, and general manager John Lynch committed to him while speaking to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine last month. Yet the rumors persisted.
Fans weren't the only ones confused by the Brady-to-49ers rumors. It sounds like the team was too, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
As part of a larger feature taking a look at each NFL team's free agency moves so far, Fowler touched on the now-dead Brady chatter.
"I don't know why that was a thing," a 49ers team source told Fowler.
Brady last week signed a two-year deal worth $50 million in fully guaranteed money to finish his illustrious career with the Buccaneers after 20 years with the New England Patriots.
Meanwhile, the 49ers move forward with Jimmy Garoppolo, who led the team to the Super Bowl in his first full NFL season as a starter. And for those in the media who wanted to find a future link between the team and Kirk Cousins, that ship seemingly sailed when the quarterback signed a two-year extension with the Minnesota Vikings last week.
