Nick Wright of Fox Sports 1 joined Colin Cowherd on The Herd this week and perfectly explained, as Peter King of NBC Sports did, why all of the Tom Brady to the San Francisco 49ers chatter makes very little sense.

Yes, it would be good for Brady, who is in the twilight of his career. The 42-year-old future Hall of Famer would land on a great team with several weapons and a great play-caller in Kyle Shanahan within his hypothetical scenario. The New England Patriots, should they be able to land Jimmy Garoppolo as a result, would be better off and set at quarterback for the foreseeable future.


That's two out of three parties that would need to be interested for this to work. The problem is the third.

"Why would the Niners be interested?" Wright asks. "That's the part I can't wrap my mind around. You've got a 28-year-old quarterback making $27 million a year, coming off the best season of his career, even if I think those numbers are slightly inflated. Why would you want to replace him with a 42-year-old quarterback coming off the worst season of his career, who's going to want to make about $27 million a year?

"That's the part where the circle cannot be squared, or the square cannot be circled. I can't figure out why the Niners would want to do this, and if they don't want to do this, this has no legs whatsoever.

"I get why for Brady. I get why for the Patriots. I do not understand why for San Francisco, so that's why I can't see this actually coming into fruition."

It's worth noting that Cowherd also can't figure out why Brady to the 49ers is a story when it makes little sense on San Francisco's part.


"Even if you did think Brady was better, you would have to, if you're the Niners, draft a quarterback this year," Cowherd said. "Wouldn't you have to address it? It is the toughest division in the NFL."
