Hurd has been dealing with back issues since the 49ers' second game of the preseason, an August 19 matchup against the Denver Broncos. He did not play in the team's final two exhibition games. He did not practice on Monday. Hurd will not practice on Wednesday, either. Players had Tuesday off.
"Most likely not going to play this week," Shanahan said during his Wednesday press conference. "Haven't ruled him out yet but if I had to say something today, he's doubtful."
Shanahan doesn't believe the injury is a long-term issue and is more a week-to-week situation. It isn't, however, the day-to-day issue it was once believed to be.
As for Wednesday's practice, defensive end Nick Bosa (ankle) will be limited. He returned to practice on Monday along with cornerback Jason Verrett (ankle), who will also be limited. The hope is that both will be available for Sunday's game.
Wide receiver Dante Pettis (groin), center Weston Richburg (knee), and cornerback K'Waun Williams (knee) will also be limited.
In addition to Hurd, not practicing are wide receiver Trent Taylor (foot) and tackle Joe Staley, who is receiving a veteran-day off.
