If offensive lineman Anthony Davis' football career is to continue, it won't be with the San Francisco 49ers. The team promptly waived him, according to Field Yates of ESPN, after the NFL approved his request for reinstatement on Tuesday.


As Yates notes, Davis is now a free agent and free to sign with any team. This latest return is his second attempt at a comeback. Davis missed several games in 2014 after suffering a concussion and announced on June 5, 2015, that he would not play during the ensuing season. He filed for reinstatement on July 25, 2016, which was approved by the league.


Davis took part in training camp in 2016 and even earned a spot on the 49ers roster. However, he officially retired on September 26, 2016, after suffering a concussion during a practice following the team's regular-season opener.

The NFL's reported decrease in concussions last season contributed to Davis' decision to return to the game, according to the letter he submitted to the league.

The 49ers made Davis, who played college football at Rutgers, the No. 11 overall draft pick in 2010. He appeared in 71 games — all starts — during his first stint with the team and appeared in another in 2016.
