All rookie contracts are now for a length of four years. Only first-round selections come with an option for a fifth year, which, for the 49ers, only applies to defensive end Nick Bosa. If they choose to do so, NFL teams must activate the player's fifth-year option before the fourth and final year of the rookie deal. For example, the 49ers recently decided to exercise the fifth-year option of defensive tackle DeForest Buckner and had until May 3 to do so.
Having set numbers for each spot eliminates the need to negotiate salaries and only leaves items like bonus payment terms, roster bonus allocations, and other miscellaneous structural items. It's those extra items that can stall an agreement. The 49ers' first-round selection last year, tackle Mike McGlinchey, didn't sign his rookie contract until two days before players reported to training camp.
The 49ers will have an estimated rookie pool of $11,158,837 in 2019, according to OverTheCap.com's estimations.
Note: At the time of this post, OverTheCap.com only listed seven of the 49ers' eight draft selections. We added the eighth, Tim Harris (No. 198 overall), into the above figure. OverTheCap.com still has that selection belonging to the Cincinnati Bengals.
