"My roots have always been in the zone-run system that Kyle Shanahan has always run," Scangarello told reporters during an introductory press conference on Thursday.
Scangarello spent two seasons learning from Shanahan in San Francisco. He spent 2015 as an offensive quality control coach with the Atlanta Falcons when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator there.
"I respect Kyle Shanahan as much as anyone I've been around as a coach. His mind is brilliant, and I've learned so much from him. The reality is I feel like he's always evolving every year. He has evolved with his players, the division he's in, what he's facing, the quarterback he has, and we'll take that same approach (in Denver)."
Scangarello went on to reveal that Shanahan barely looks at his game plan during a game and typically calls plays from memory.
Shanahan, who is in Mobile, Alabama preparing to coach the South squad in the Senior Bowl, was disappointed to lose Scangarello to the Broncos but has no doubt he will be successful in Denver.
"Rich did a great job (with us)," Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday. "I started with Rich in Atlanta where he worked mainly doing our runs, helping out our offensive line coach. But he was always a quarterback guy, and that's why I wanted to bring him to San Francisco.
"Spending two years with him, we got a lot closer through that. We got to go through a lot of things together. Rich is a very good coach. He's called plays before, done it a number of times in college, and he'll do a very good job with Denver."
What are the Broncos are getting with Scangarello?
"They're getting a very good coordinator," Shanahan responded. "He's done it before at the college level. He knows the run game and the pass game. Rich is a very confident coach who will go in there and do a very good job. They're lucky to have him, and it was tough to lose him."
