The 49ers also officially announced the signing of long snapper Colin Holba to a two-year deal. He replaces Kyle Nelson, who was suspended 10 games for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances. Matt Barrows of The Athletic first reported the news of Holba's signing.
In addition to these moves, the 49ers signed safety Terrell Williams Jr. to the practice squad.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters before Wednesday's practice that he was leaning toward filling Watson's roster spot with Taumoepenu.
The 49ers made Taumoepenu a sixth-round draft pick out of Utah in 2017. He appeared in two games as a rookie but was waived by the team on September 1, 2018. The 49ers signed Taumoepenu to the practice squad the next day.
Watson has been credited with five combined tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble in four games this season. He appeared in 14 games for the 49ers last season and registered eight combined tackles.
