The San Francisco 49ers were looking to acquire long-term talent leading to Tuesday's trade deadline, not to rent a player for the remainder of the season when the team is 1-7. Head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR on Wednesday morning and said the opportunity to do so just wasn't there.

It was general manager John Lynch's turn on Wednesday night to explain why the 49ers let Tuesday's deadline come and go without making any moves to improve the roster.


"Really, the last two weeks, we talked to every single team," Lynch said on KNBR. "In both respects, really, I think people were interested in some of our guys, and you've got to take a look at that with the season the way it's gone and say, 'OK, what can help us now? What can help us in the future?' Nothing came to fruition there.

"Then we did look at some players that were out there and available. I think one reality that just kind of stinks when you're having his kind of year, things are even tougher. Your players don't look as good when you're 1-7. You've got to make decisions. Are we in position to go rent a player for the rest of this year?

"For us, as I've said before, it had to be a situation where we're getting a player for at least a couple of years and that just never worked out. It's tough because you have to be patient, but we've got to kind of draft our way out of this. I think we've had two good drafts. We've got to continue to put those out there. We also have some money to spend in free agency this offseason.

"For the time being, I think we have enough in this building. Is it a complete roster? No, not by any means. We need to get better, and that's a big part of my job, and I need to do better there, but we have enough. I think as evidenced by the fact that we're in all these games. We just need to learn how to finish."
