A surfing scout approached Mostert when he was surfing and skateboarding with his friends and wanted to see some tape of his skills, the running back revealed on the "Murph & Mac" show. Mostert didn't have tape, so the scout asked him to perform some stunts on the spot. The 14-year-old impressed.
That's when Mostert got offered a contract but turned it down.
Mostert hasn't surfed in over ten years but remains one of the biggest fans of the sport among his 49ers teammates. He even convinced defensive lineman Solomon Thomas and long snapper Kyle Nelson to join him in the water while in Hawaii for DeForest Buckner's wedding.
"I was kind of nervous, but I actually did well," Mostert said. "I was surprised about myself."
That took place in Waikiki on the island of Oʻahu, where the waves were moderate. Next on Mostert's surfing to-do list is a visit to Maui's North Shore.
Mostert, whose full name is Dominque Raheem Mostert, also shares the story of being named after NBA great Dominique Wilkins, discusses always being ready to prove himself on the football field, and more.
