A coin flip was used as a tiebreaker between the two teams because the 49ers and Raiders each finished with 6-10 records and matching strength-of-schedules (.512).
"[Raiders general manager] Reggie McKenzie and I were kind of talking trash last week about our coin flip skills," 49ers general manager John Lynch joked last month during an interview on KNBR. "We'll see how that goes but is it that big a difference (between nine and ten)? It could be. You obviously want to win it, but we'll let that happen."
The 49ers, who were not awarded any compensatory picks this year, currently own nine selections in April's draft. The team's own second-round pick belongs to the New England Patriots thanks to the trade in late-October of 2017 for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Thanks to the result of the coin flip, that draft pick will be the 43rd-overall and not the 41st.
