Tarver was one of the few holdovers from previous regimes when head coach Kyle Shanahan was hired as head coach last year. In 2017, he interviewed with the Washington Redskins for their defensive coordinator job.
Tarver served as the Oakland Raiders' defensive coordinator from 2012 through 2014. Before that, he was with the 49ers from 2001 through 2010 serving as the offensive quality control coach, assistant running backs coach, and outside linebackers coach during that span. Tarver returned to the 49ers under Jim Tomsula in 2015.
In January, San Francisco lost assistant defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase, who left to become UCLA's defensive line coach as part of former 49ers head coach Chip Kelly's staff.
Another notable loss was that of Ken Norton Jr., who was with the 49ers for a week in January before leaving to become the defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks.
