On Tuesday evening, ESPN's Todd McShay, Matt Bowen, and Steve Muench wrote a combined recap which included the best quarterbacks and players who may have raised their draft stock during Day 1 at the Senior Bowl.
Included within the ESPN feature were two players who reportedly met with the 49ers. One was a quarterback while the other fell within the category of "Draft risers from Day 1."
The 49ers hope to have their quarterback of the future in Jimmy Garoppolo, so it is no shock the team didn't meet extensively with the top two headliners at the Senior Bowl – Wyoming's Josh Allen and Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield. The quarterback they did meet with was Kyle Lauletta of Richmond, who is on the South squad.
Other teams who reportedly met at length with Lauletta: Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings
ESPN currently ranks Lauletta (6-3, 217) as the eighth-best quarterback entering the draft. In 2017, he passed for 3,737 yards and 28 touchdowns with12 interceptions. The three-year starter passed for 10,357 yards and 71 touchdowns with 35 interceptions from 2015-17. Lauletta accomplished that with four different offensive coordinators during his time in college. He is seen as a Day 3 pick in April's draft.
McShay noted that Lauletta had a good practice on Tuesday and displayed adequate arm strength but also had a "funky" delivery.
"Of the South quarterbacks, I thought he had the most consistent ball placement," wrote McShay. "He understands his progressions and made fast reads, with good touch, and he showed good feel for the offense. One thing to watch was that sometimes it appeared he wanted to see the wide receiver get out of a break before throwing it."
The other player the 49ers met with who was listed by ESPN as a draft riser is Colorado State wide receiver Michael Gallup from the North squad.
Other teams who reportedly met at length with Gallup: None reported
Gallup is a consensus All-American who registered 100 receptions for 1,413 yards in 2017, which led the Mountain West in both categories. He also had seven receiving touchdowns. In 2016, Gallup caught 76 passes for 1,272 and 14 touchdowns.
"Gallup looked like a natural pass-catcher early, and extended for a [Baker] Mayfield pass down the seam during team drills even though he knew he'd get lit up," wrote Muench. "At 6-1, 198 pounds, Gallup flashed a solid release and good speed."
Players from the North and South squads will participate in two more scheduled practices this week (Wednesday and Thursday) before the Senior Bowl is played on January 27 at Ladd–Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama.
