Goodwin headed into the locker room after a violent and scary hit by Rams defensive back Blake Countess, who received a penalty on the play. Goodwin remained on the ground for several minutes while being examined by medical personnel.
The injury occurred on 1st-and-goal for the 49ers near the end of the first half. Running back Carlos Hyde scored on an eight-yard touchdown run on the next play.
Goodwin was initially announced as doubtful to return to the game with a concussion. He was later declared out for the remainder of the game.
Update: Goodwin was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Goodwin was just 38 yards shy of his first career 1,000-yard season. He will end the season with 56 receptions for 962 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Goodwin's totals in receptions and receiving yards are each career highs.
Prior to this season, Goodwin's best year came in 2016 when he had 29 catches for 431 yards with the Buffalo Bills.
Goodwin was on pace to become the 11th 49ers player to reach the 1,000-yard milestone in franchise history and the first to do so since Anquan Boldin in 2014.
Goodwin was averaging just 2.5 catches and 52.5 receiving yards in each of the 49ers' first 11 games. Since Jimmy Garoppolo became the new starting quarterback for San Francisco, Goodwin's average receiving yards had increased to 89 yards per game, not including Sunday's game against the Rams.
Despite a challenging year emotionally that saw Goodwin lose a child and his father, he is flourishing as the 49ers' number one receiver in place of Pierre Garçon, who was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury.
The 49ers signed Goodwin, who is in his fifth NFL season, to a two-year, $6 million contract on March 9. He spent the previous five seasons with Buffalo.
