Max, who is the son of former 49ers, New York Giants, and Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey and the older brother of Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, was signed by the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of Duke in 2016 but released before the start of that season. He was signed to the Packers' practice squad on December 20, 2016, and then promoted to the active roster on January 21, 2017, before the NFC Championship Game.
The Packers waived McCaffrey on September 2. Since then he has spent time on the practice squad of the New Orleans Saints and the active roster of the Jacksonville Jaguars. McCaffrey appeared in five games this season with Jacksonville and registered a reception for four yards before being waived on October 21. He rejoined the Packers practice squad on October 24.
At Duke, McCaffrey appeared in 53 games and started 38. During that time, he had 117 receptions for 1,341 yards and 12 touchdowns. McCaffrey started 13 games for the Blue Devils in 2015 and had 52 receptions for 643 yards and five touchdowns that season.
