"I'm not going to say (he'll play Sunday) for sure but I'm feeling pretty good about it," Shanahan said. "I know he wants to get out there hard. We still have a practice today so you can always have setbacks and stuff but I'd be surprised if he doesn't play."
Following Friday's practice, which was the team's final one of the week, Shanahan told reporters he believes Foster is on track to play on Sunday.
"He's not 100-percent ready to go but I feel very optimistic about it," Shanahan said. "He had another good practice today. As long as there's not any setbacks here over the next 40 hours or whatever it is, I feel pretty confident."
Foster suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Carolina Panthers on September 10. He returned to practice last week but did not play during Sunday's narrow road loss to the Washington Redskins.
The 49ers are seeking their first win of the season. Kickoff against the Cowboys on Sunday is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PT.
