Foster is recovering from a high-ankle sprain suffered during Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. He will not play this week but will travel with the team to Glendale, Arizona for its Sunday game against the Cardinals.
Shanahan was asked if Foster would be wearing that custom jersey on the sidelines at University of Phoenix Stadium.
"I don't know," Shanahan answered. "I didn't even know about it. I think [49ers vice president of communications] Bob [Lange] might have shown me later. I thought it was very cool. Did he get fined for it?"
Shanahan then looked over toward a member of the 49ers Communications staff for confirmation.
"I have no problem with it until someone else does," Shanahan continued. "I thought it was pretty neat. It's only neat if that's how you play and I think he does play that way so I thought it was pretty neat. I don't think he's changing his last name to that so I know eventually I'm sure it will need to say 'Foster.'"
Foster has been warming up with the 49ers this week prior to team practices and has even resumed running. However, no timetable for his return has been officially announced.
