The Kyle Shanahan Era started with a win, albeit in Week 1 of the preseason. The 49ers fell behind early, giving up an opening drive touchdown to the Alex Smith-led Chiefs. The starters on offense only played halfway through the first quarter, with quarterback Brian Hoyer going 1-4 for three yards and running back Carlos Hyde having two carries for 0 yards.
The 49ers battled back from an early deficit to make it 9-7 at half, with three field goals. They had two touchdowns called back because of penalties in an overall sloppy game (17 penalties for 131 yards). The Chiefs briefly took the lead 17-9 in the third quarter, but the 49ers scored 18 unanswered points to pull off the 27-17 win.
The battle for backup quarterback was in full swing. Matt Barkley was the backup tonight and completed 10 of 17 passes for 168 yards, including a long pass to wideout Aldrick Robinson that set up one of the Niners' four field goals. C.J. Beathard performed admirably, completing 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
Rookie Solomon Thomas played almost the entire game, due to an injury to fellow defensive lineman Ronald Blair. Thomas played with high energy all night, making a couple tackles in the backfield for losses and delivering a big hit on the sideline. Aaron Lynch had two sacks and looked quicker and much more effective than in the past.

The other first-round rookie, Reuben Foster, nearly had an interception in the first quarter. He started the game next to NaVorro Bowman with the first team defense. Foster also had two tackles in limited action but was moving well sideline to sideline.
Rashard Robinson gave up a big play to Tyreek Hill on the game's first play, but came back on the next drive to grab an interception and return it deep into Kansas City territory.
On the offensive side of the ball, the running backs took center stage with rookie Joe Williams showing strong burst and quickness on his way to rushing for 60 yards on seven carries. Raheem Mostert iced the game in the fourth quarter with 89 yards on 15 carries total.
Rookie wide receiver Trent Taylor had a 30-yard punt return near the end of the game and hauled in a diving catch over the middle of the field to keep the second-to-last drive going.
The next game is next Saturday at Levi's Stadium against the Denver Broncos. (7PM Pacific).
