Garnett will have his knee "cleaned out" on Thursday and the 49ers aren't sure about his availability for their Week 1 regular season home game against the Carolina Panthers. On Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Garnett would be out for "at least one month," which put his availability for the start of the regular season in jeopardy.
"He's going to get his knee cleaned out tomorrow," Shanahan said on Wednesday. "Timeframe (for his return)? I haven't been given one yet. I'm hoping that he has a chance for Week 1 but I know that's going to be a battle."
Garnett injured his knee on Friday during practice. Following the injury, the second-year offensive lineman was replaced by Zane Beadles.
Shanahan has previously stated that he does not believe the injury to be long-term but that it would take "a little bit of time."
The 49ers hope that Garnett can be a big contributor for them in 2017. He was the 28th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and started 11 games for the 49ers as a rookie last season. Garnett appeared on Monday's 49ers-Chiefs unofficial depth chart as the starter at left guard. Brandon Fusco was listed as the starting right guard while Beadles was shown as Garnett's backup.
