Ryans, who is just 32, has played for the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles. He was released by Philadelphia in February of 2016. Ryans was originally drafted in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Texans and went on to spend 10 seasons in the NFL. Ryans appeared in 140 games, starting 139, and registered 735 tackles, 46 passes defended, 13.5 sacks, 10 fumble recoveries and seven interceptions.
During Ryans' career, he earned AP Defensive Rookie of the Year (2006) and First-Team All-Pro (2007) honors in addition to being named to two Pro Bowls (2007, 2009).
Shanahan was a member of the Texans coaching staff for much of Ryans' time in Houston, so there is some familiarity there.
