The younger Shanahan is currently in Houston preparing for Super Bowl LI between his Falcons and the New England Patriots. A report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk surfaced on Friday that the younger Shanahan might use the great leverage he has over the 49ers to get his father a job within the organization.
Everyone seemed to be assuming that because Shanahan has leverage, he will choose to use it in such a manner. That hasn't sounded like the case so far. There had been reports that final say over the 53-man roster was not a deal breaker for Shanahan to come to the 49ers. Jim Trotter of ESPN reported on Monday that new 49ers general manager John Lynch would have control over the 90-man roster, draft, and free agency, but that Shanahan would have final say on the 53-man roster.
Lynch received a six-year deal with the 49ers, which he said Monday that he negotiated himself. It is expected that Shanahan will receive a deal of similar length once he is officially hired.
Shanahan has been with Atlanta since 2015 and has nine years of experience as an offensive coordinator. Prior to his two years with Atlanta, he held the same position with the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, and Houston Texans. Shanahan was the offensive coordinator in Washington at the same time that his father was the head coach there.
