Kirchner was one of two Seahawks executives that were interviewed for the 49ers' vacancy. The other was co-directory of player personnel Scott Fitterer. Both were interviewed by CEO Jed York and vice president of football operations Paraag Marathe on Monday.
The 49ers announced the firing of general manager Trent Baalke following the team's final game of the 2016 season.
On Monday, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels took his name out of the running for the 49ers' head coaching vacancy, leaving Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach and offensive line coach Tom Cable as the only known candidates for the job formerly held by Chip Kelly.
Kirchner was a name that was linked with Cable. Could this be an indication that the Seahawks coach will not be hired by the 49ers or, as Garafolo explained, was it simply because of his great working relationship with Seattle general manager John Schneider? With Shanahan as the overwhelming fan favorite, the Niner Faithful is likely hoping the former to be true.
