Former 49ers’ Star and Hall-of-Famer Jimmy Johnson Passes Away at 86

Not everyone knows how good former San Francisco 49ers' cornerback Jimmy Johnson was ... and that includes the NFL media. Yet he was one of the NFL's first shutdown corners, a Pro Football Hall of Famer so accomplished that he was once called "the greatest defensive back who ever lived." Sadly, Johnson died Wednesday night after what his family said was a long illness. He was 86.

Logan Ryan appeared in five regular season games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, with two of those appearances in a starting role. Ryan also played in all three of the 49ers' postseason games, including the Super Bowl last February. Ryan's time with the 49ers started a little differently considering he wasn't in the league when the team called him. Ryan was on a cruise with his family when the 49ers decided they needed another defensive back. They called Ryan and before he knew it, he was on his way to Santa Clara to play for a team that almost won the Super Bowl. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Atlanta Falcons have signed former San Francisco 49ers tight end Ross Dwelley, who became an unrestricted free agent on March 13.
