Greenlaw still emotional about ‘devastating’ Super Bowl injury
May 9, 2024 at 9:00 AM
SANTA CLARA — Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is three months into an expected nine-month journey to return to the football field. He often thinks back to that February evening in Las Vegas when he sustained a torn Achilles as he prepared to take the field after a second-quarter change of possession in Super Bowl LVIII. "Sometimes you get a little flashback and shed a couple of tears thinking about it," Greenlaw told NBC Sports Bay Area in his first interview since the 49ers' 25-22 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Greenlaw played the 49ers' first 12 defensive snaps in the game and registered three tackles. He could not continue after sustaining a freak, non-contact injury. Greenlaw underwent surgery four days later. "It's definitely an emotional thing because you know how hard you worked for that moment, how hard your team worked to get in that moment," Greenlaw said. "You're that close to it and you can't go out there and compete. So it just kind of feels like you left everybody hanging. "So it's one of the things that you just kind of think about and you just try not to cry." Greenlaw had been battling an issue with his right Achilles that kept him out of the 49ers' Week 18...

Dre Greenlaw suffered a devastating injury during February's Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, tearing his Achilles and missing half the game. The San Francisco 49ers linebacker has been on the challenging road to recovery since then.
Greenlaw's progress appears promising. He attended the Dwight Clark Legacy Series event last week without a protective boot and seemed to be moving well as he walked on stage to accept the prestigious Dwight Clark Award.
"It's a long, long, slow process," Greenlaw told the audience at the California Theatre in San Jose. "I'm feeling really, really good, though. I'm happy to be able to walk on the stage, actually."

The San Francisco 49ers were the NFL's top team last season, according to ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI). However, the Kansas City Chiefs ultimately took home the Lombardi Trophy.
The FPI is ESPN's ratings and projection model for the NFL, factoring in win totals from ESPN BET, each team's schedule, roster strength, and other metrics. Entering this season, the FPI once again favors the Bay Area team, giving the 49ers a 16 percent chance to win Super Bowl LIX. The Chiefs come in second with a 12 percent chance.
"The San Francisco 49ers might have lost Super Bowl LVIII to the Kansas City Chiefs, but they enter 2024 as the best team in football and favorites to win Super Bowl LIX, according to ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI)," explained ESPN's Seth Walder. "The

Fred Warner is confident that his moment will come. He believes the San Francisco 49ers remain one of the best teams in the NFL, and it's only a matter of time before they hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
It's been over three months since Warner and his teammates experienced the heartbreak of the overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. Speaking to NFL Network's Steve Wyche and Judy Battista, the star linebacker admits he isn't quite over that loss. In fact, he isn't even over the Super Bowl defeat he suffered four years ago.
"Those things stay with you," Warner said. "In this league, you earn scars. Throughout the league, you face adversity. Losing the Super Bowl, of course, is as big of an adversity that you can hit, and it stays with you
Vernon Davis weighs in on 49ers' Super Bowl chances

The San Francisco 49ers are looking to rebound from a heartbreaking Super Bowl defeat and return to the NFL's big game in the upcoming season. The road won't be easy; getting there once, much less twice in a row, is challenging.
The Kansas City Chiefs accomplished that feat, beating the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII and then, in February, the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. Their journey was an uphill battle. Kansas City won the AFC West but entered the postseason as the third seed. They had to knock off the top two seeds on their way to the Super Bowl.
The 49ers overcame adversity differently. They were the top seed in the NFC but had to mount comebacks in each of their playoff victories leading up to their clash with the Chiefs.
