San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR on Friday morning and shared some injury updates. All eyes during practices this week have been on the statuses of wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.
Aiyuk (hamstring) got back on the practice field on Thursday, but Samuel remained sidelined as he recovers from a Jones fracture in June.
Shanahan was asked about Samuel's status for Sunday when the 49ers open the season by hosting the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium.
"I haven't gotten an update from the trainers yet," Shanahan said on the Murph & Mac show, "but I'm really hoping they're going to get out and practice today. I know we got Aiyuk out there yesterday, and he looked good. Deebo wasn't able to get out there yesterday, but the goal is to try to get him out today."
Most believe that Samuel not practicing on Friday would mean he is unlikely to play on Sunday. He has not practiced with the team this offseason, and the 49ers probably won't throw him into a game without getting some work in beforehand.
"Deebo is in a different situation, not being a rookie, as compared to Aiyuk," Shanahan continued. "Deebo got to play a ton last year. Even though he's going into just year two, he got a good introduction into the league last year, so I don't worry about him as much.
"If he's healthy, he's going to be good to go out there, but he's got to get out to practice today and at least show us that.
"And Aiyuk, the fact that he got out yesterday will give him another chance to get two days in. Aiyuk got at least a couple of weeks in camp (before his injury), so he has a better chance at least of being there."
Added Shanahan: "It's still a game-day decision. Both of those guys and (Ben) Garland, it's going to come down to the wire with all of them."
Shanahan also shared that linebacker Fred Warner is full-go after spending time on the reserve/COVID-19 list and defensive ends Nick Bosa (leg) and Dee Ford (calf) are expected to play on Sunday. All three returned to practice this week.
"Dee Ford and Bosa, they both missed a lot of camp with some legit things, but nothing that was too bad," Shanahan said. "It was just some things that was going to take about two to three weeks to heal, and I think both of them were starting to do pretty good last week, and they've had a full week of practice this week. They're 100 percent ready to go."
