Better safe than sorry, right? Dale Arnold of NESN reports that the New England Patriots are working on a new contract for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Yes, Garoppolo is still with the San Francisco 49ers, and this news doesn't necessarily mean that a deal is imminent. If accurate, it just means that the Patriots are getting everything in order -- just in case a trade happens. It could also mean that the Patriots believe the 49ers are likely to seek a trade. It was maddening for San Francisco 49ers fans. It was maddening for all NFL fans and even much of the media. Social media has not been a fun place since the team traded up to the No. 3 overall pick on March 26. There was so much rampant speculation surrounding what the 49ers might do, and the team's brass was playing it close to the vest, refusing to offer any hints. There were reports that even those inside the building, like coaches and some front-office personnel, didn't even know which direction head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were leaning. Even CEO Jed York joked on Thursday that he had no idea. That, of course, turned out to be a lie as York proceeded to further mess with the fanbase with some cryptic tweets. Why didn't the 49ers draft a WR, TE, or DE? It just worked out that way

An ideal situation for any NFL team would be to come out of the NFL Draft having selected the best players on its board at their draft spots that also happened to be at positions of need, but things usually don't fall into place that easily. Such was the case in the 2021 NFL Draft for the San Francisco 49ers, who were able to fill multiple needs with their picks but also had a couple of moments where they came away with players at positions they weren't planning to address due to those players being the top prospects on their board. For anyone wondering why the 49ers didn't add some depth at areas where they could have used it, such as wide receiver, tight end, or EDGE, that's the reason.
