Maiocco: Cornerbacks are the 49ers’ deepest group

Aug 6, 2016 at 10:09 AM--

Matt Maiocco joined Damon Bruce on 95.7 The Game on Friday to discuss the San Francisco 49ers. One topic that he discussed was the deepest group on the team that has most impressed him this offseason – the cornerbacks.

"The deepest position group – and this might surprise you – it's a young group, they're going to have their growing pains, but I do think that there is a lot of talent there, and there should be a lot of talent seeing that they've used seven draft picks the last three years. I've really been impressed with the cornerbacks. Jimmie Ward making the transition over. Tramaine Brock is the veteran. But they have some young guys who have been very very competitive."

Maiocco went on to say that maybe he should temper that back a little bit because of the talent that the unit has gone up against, bringing up that the 49ers wide receivers are mostly young and inexperienced. However, Maiocco feels that the cornerbacks have been surprisingly good.

Want to know which group he felt was not deep at all? Listen to the entire segment at 95.7 The Game.

The outlook for the 2020 San Francisco 49ers changed dramatically when second-year defensive end Nick Bosa went down with a torn ACL during Week 2 against the New York Jets. That's how good Bosa is. He is a game-changer on the edge of the once-formidable Niners defensive line that has also lost Solomon Thomas for the year to a torn ACL, and veteran Dee Ford is out indefinitely with a back injury. Joey Bosa of the Los Angeles Chargers told reporters on Wednesday that his younger brother, Nick, is staying with him and his parents during his rehab. "It's nice having them around," Joey Bosa said. "They're keeping the place [tidy] for me and food constantly running. I can't

Dre Greenlaw shares how Richard Sherman's absence has impacted the 49ers defense

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers secondary has missed Richard Sherman lining up against opposing wide receivers. The veteran cornerback hasn't played since Week 1 as he deals with a calf strain. He won't play this weekend against the Los Angeles Rams. In fact, no one seems really sure when Sherman will be back on the field. The 49ers miss Sherman, who has taken on a leadership role for his younger teammates over the past three seasons. In preparation for Sunday night's game, linebacker Dre Greenlaw sat down (virtually) with Liam McHugh of NBC Sports and shared what Sherman has meant to young players like him and the team as a whole. McHugh asked Greenlaw which teammate has influenced him the most. "You've got to give it to a guy like Sherm," Greenlaw
