49ers sign OLB Shawn Lemon

Head coach Jim Tomsula announced today that the San Francisco 49ers have signed OLB Shawn Lemon. He had worked out for the team and the 49ers decided to sign him.

Lemon has played in the CFL, the Arena Football League, and most recently been part of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who he signed with back in January.

In the CFL, he had 66 tackles, 22 sacks and three forced fumbles over his career in the league. Lemon played college football at Akron.

The signing comes just one day after the release of star linebacker Aldon Smith following his Thursday night arrest.

Linebacker Joe Walker has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster Linebacker Jonas Griffith has been signed to the practice squad The following rundown was provided by the 49ers Communications staff. Walker (6-2, 236) originally signed with the team as a free agent on March 24, 2020. He was released by the team on September 5, 2020, and signed to the team's practice squad the following day. 49ers sign TE Daniel Helm to the practice squad

Daniel Helm has cleared waivers, and the San Francisco 49ers announced that the team has signed the tight end to the practice squad. The Niners waived him on Tuesday. Helm (6-4, 225) entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers on May 10, 2019. The Chargers waived him on August 1, 2019. The 49ers initially claimed Helm on August 2, 2019. He was later waived and then signed to the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster on December 12, 2019. Helm spent part of training camp this year with the 49ers, was waived on August 15, and claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs the next day. That championship window closed fast. In January, I wrote a piece about how the 49ers were facing a must-win Super Bowl.
