49ers release RB LaMichael James

Sep 8, 2014 at 11:26 AM--

According to multiple reports, the San Francisco 49ers have granted the request of running back LaMichael James to be released.

James has long been disappointed with his role with the team. After the injury to backup running back Kendall Hunter, James was in line to become his replacement. However, a injury allowed rookie running back Carlos Hyde to emerge and earn the role of Frank Gore's backup.

James was drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Oregon. During his career with the 49ers, he has had 184 rushing yards on 41 attempts, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He also has 45 receiving yards on five catches.

It looked like a different San Francisco 49ers defensive on the field Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams, especially compared to the embarrassing performance displayed a week earlier against the Arizona Cardinals. The Niners defense held the potent Rams offense to just 10 points in the primetime shellacking. Following the home loss to an injury-plagued Cardinals squad and before the latest game, the defensive captains, which includes Ward, got together to figure out how to turn things around. At 3-5, something needed to change for the 49ers' playoff hopes to remain alive. "We ended up having a meeting with the team captains on defense," safety Jimmie Ward explained on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "I can't really speak too much on the offense.

Shanahan told reporters today that Mitchell will not take part in the first practice of the week, but the coach believes he will be good for Sunday's game. "He just had [the procedure] yesterday," Shanahan said. "Today, he's not good enough to practice. I think he'll go Sunday, but we've got to see day to day." Jeff Wilson Jr., Trenton Cannon, and

Fred Warner was Pro Football Focus' highest-graded linebacker in 2020 when the San Francisco 49ers star defender earned a career-high overall grade of 88.6. The performance earned Warner a big-time contract extension worth up to $95 million. Warner's Pro Football Focus grade has dropped to 70.2 this season, making him the NFL's eighth-highest graded linebacker among those with over 300 snaps. The linebacker admits that he is in a slump, but it's not because of a lack of effort. Warner spoke with reporters before today's practice and was asked to offer a self-assessment.
