According to multiple reports, the San Francisco 49ers have granted the request of running back LaMichael James to be released.

James has long been disappointed with his role with the team. After the injury to backup running back Kendall Hunter, James was in line to become his replacement. However, a injury allowed rookie running back Carlos Hyde to emerge and earn the role of Frank Gore's backup.

James was drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Oregon. During his career with the 49ers, he has had 184 rushing yards on 41 attempts, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He also has 45 receiving yards on five catches.
