Playoff Picture: 49ers jump in playoff standings ahead of Week 12

By David Bonilla
Nov 22

Entering Week 11, the San Francisco 49ers held the seventh and final spot in the NFC playoff standings. However, heading into Week 12, after the team's 38-10 rout of the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City, San Francisco's playoff picture looks brighter. While the 49ers and Seattle Seahawks both own identical 6-4 records, San Francisco has beaten Seattle once this season, so it owns the tiebreaker between the two teams. That has lifted the 49ers into first place in the NFC West. If the season ended today, the 49ers would be the No. 3 seed in the NFC and would be preparing to host the New York Giants at Levi's Stadium. San Francisco has won two of its last three

Since the beginning of the offseason, San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason has made the most of his opportunities, earning praise for his hard-nosed, physical running style that embodied an NFL player. However, due to a variety of circumstances, Mason has yet to see significant NFL action. After Elijah Mitchell suffered a sprained MCL in Week 1, Mason could've seen opportunities behind Jeff Wilson in San Francisco's running back rotation, given his performance in the offseason and style of play. But, the 49ers opted for a different direction, utilizing Wilson as a bell-cow back, significantly decreasing the team's efficiency on the ground, before involving veteran Tevin Coleman, who had a short stint on the active

How did the 49ers work through that schedule? We'll look at that in this version of 49ers Notebook, along with some postgame thoughts from head coach Kyle Shanahan on the running back situation, a look at an impressive streak the 49ers snapped on Sunday, and much more.
