San Francisco 49ers projected 2021 depth chart: Post-draft

By Kirk Larrabee
Apr 29, 2021

How will the 49ers' depth chart look as the NFL Draft moves on? That's a question we'll attempt to answer here. It's a bit difficult at this time of the year to accurately project a depth chart, given how many players are new to the team, how many will come and go in the weeks ahead, and how many positions may shift down the line. There's an awful lot of guesswork going on here, but we'll give it a try based on who is on the roster at the moment. Former NFL scout John Middlekauff recently described the possibility of the San Francisco 49ers making Mac Jones of Alabama the No. 3 overall pick as "arrogant." Jones appears to fit the mold of what head coach Kyle Shanahan has sought in the past — a smart and accurate passer who can manage his offense well, à la Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan, and Jimmy Garoppolo. It's hard for many fans to look past the possibility of passing on Justin Fields of Ohio State or Trey Lance of North Dakota State, though. Many among the media feel the two are better long-term prospects, too. Both are seen as more athletic prospects with potentially higher upsides. Not only could they turn out to be great in the pocket, but their athleticism could provide Shanahan with an added dimension

Analyst on 49ers' draft options: 'John Lynch wants Trey Lance'

By David Bonilla
Apr 22, 2021

Analyst and writer Michael Detillier, who contributes to several media outlets, joined the BetQL Daily podcast on Thursday and discussed the San Francisco 49ers' upcoming quarterback decision in next week's draft. Detillier recalls the day the team moved up nine spots from No. 12 overall to get into a position to acquire one of the top young talents. He was getting ready to publish his mock draft and needed to make some changes as it was headed to print due to the trade. While the national narrative quickly linked Mac Jones of Alabama to the 49ers, Detillier heard that general manager John Lynch had his sights set on a different prospect. Whether or not head coach Kyle Shanahan felt the same way is unknown. "When I went to print was the day of the
