'What's with their coach?': 49ers' Jimmie Ward feels disrespected by Rams' Sean McVay

By David Bonilla

Does Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay think less of safety Jimmie Ward than he should? The San Francisco 49ers defender appears to believe so. In a conversation with Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated, the soon-to-be 30-year-old safety feels like McVay unfairly targets him, thinking he can take advantage of the veteran defensive back. The safety and beat writer remembered a matchup in 2019 when McVay tested Ward's coverage skills with several offensive players, likely thinking he could take advantage of the defender. "What's with their coach? Does he have the big head or something like (that)?" Ward told Cohn during

The San Francisco 49ers still have three unsigned draft picks. Among them is the No. 3 overall pick — quarterback Trey Lance. The others are third-round picks Trey Sermon and Ambry Thomas. With players scheduled to report to training camp in a couple of weeks, should fans be concerned that the 49ers' quarterback of the future remains unsigned? Probably not. Lance's contract terms have been predetermined thanks to the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement. All rookie contracts are for a length of four years, and Lance's will be worth $34.1 million with a signing bonus of $22.2 million and a 2021 salary-cap hit of $6.2 million. San Francisco will also have the option to add a fifth year to the deal down the road. What usually holds up rookie

The San Francisco 49ers endured a league-high number of injuries last season in what was supposed to be a year dedicated to avenging their Super Bowl loss. Instead, the injuries quickly transformed the team's roster by Week 2. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo missed 10 games. Tight end George Kittle missed eight. The then-reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, Nick Bosa, was done by Week 2. The team went on to win just six games, finishing last in the NFC West. The 49ers hope 2020 was an outlier. On paper, the roster is talented. Players have to stay on the football field, though, for the team to reach its potential. It's difficult to win without your best young pass rusher or your top receiving threat. It's a challenge to put the hopes of a season on the

Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers when the team opens the regular season on September 12 against the Detroit Lions. How long he remains the starter is the question. San Francisco traded up to draft Garoppolo's eventual successor, Trey Lance, at No. 3 overall. He will bring a much different dynamic to head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense. The inexperienced quarterback just needs time to learn and master the playbook and scheme. We asked our 49ers Webzone contributors to predict when Lance will get his first start. Below are the responses in the order in which they were received.
