San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and his new wife, Jenna, attended Sunday's college basketball game to support their alma mater, Iowa State, as they faced Stanford in the second round of the women's NCAA basketball tournament.
"It means so much [to be here]," Purdy told the Associated Press. "As an alumni you're so proud to see the program do so well and going through this tournament and having the success that they've had. I've had their back. Blessed to be here to support them."
However, Stanford's fans were the last ones cheering. The Cardinal beat the Cyclones in a thrilling game that featured 18 lead changes.
Purdy knows what it's like to suffer a gut-wrenching postseason defeat. Just last month, his 49ers walked off the Allegiant Stadium field after losing Super Bowl 58 to the Kansas City Chiefs. Like that NFL game, it took overtime to force Iowa State's exit from the tournament.

After the game, Purdy delivered a heartfelt speech to Iowa State's athletes.
"All you guys are some freaking ballers," Purdy told the team. "I hope you guys know the standard is high here. The standard is high. You guys have laid a foundation. You guys have had a foundation with Coach [Bill] Fennelly. And what you guys continue to do and allow the younger guys to come in and keep it up, that's all you guys.
"So heads freaking high as you walk out because you guys put it all out there. That's all I got to say. I love you guys, what you guys stand for, and I'm so proud to be a Cyclone and watch because what an honor. So heads up, freaking champions, in my eyes. Love you girls."
