Things get hectic in the NFL around Halloween with the trade deadline typically falling around that time. According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, the San Francisco 49ers are among six NFL teams proposing to postpone the chaos of the deadline by two weeks—from Week 8 to Week 10. The other teams favoring this change are the Cleveland Browns, Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, and Detroit Lions.
"Our professional sports league has the earliest trade deadline by far," Browns general manager Andrew Berry told CBS Sports, pointing out that the NFL's trade deadline occurs at about 45 percent through the schedule. Other leagues have their deadlines much later in their respective seasons.
Moving the deadline back would make sense, especially considering the NFL is now operating on an 18-week regular-season schedule. However, it's uncertain if the majority of league owners will support delaying it by two weeks. Jones reports that there is "some movement" toward pushing the deadline back by just one week, to Week 9.
Postponing the deadline would benefit teams making late-season playoff pushes who look to either bolster their rosters or make up for suffering a significant injury setback. A later deadline would allow teams to make more informed decisions based on a larger sample size of games.
NFL owners are scheduled to hold their annual meetings in Florida starting on March 24, during which they will discuss and potentially vote on such proposals.
