Brock Purdy's critics were quick to point to this past weekend's performance against the Green Bay Packers as evidence that the second-year player doesn't deserve to be in the conversation of the NFL's best quarterbacks.
Yes, the San Francisco 49ers won on a brilliantly orchestrated game-winning touchdown drive in the game's closing minutes, but Purdy struggled to find rhythm for much of the contest.
Purdy's uneven performance hasn't deterred most 49ers fans, including Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice, who continues to believe that the team's 24-year-old quarterback has what it takes to bring home the franchise's sixth Lombardi trophy.
"I believe in Brock Purdy," Rice said Wednesday on Bay Area radio station 95.7 The Game. "I love his intensity, his decision-making, all of those things. And I think he's going to have his best football game this weekend."
The 49ers are preparing to play in their third consecutive NFC Championship Game, hosting the Detroit Lions at Levi's Stadium on Sunday. Purdy and the offense might have to play their best football of the season to secure a trip to Las Vegas for Super Bowl 58.
"I think Brock is so composed, even with all of this rah-rah stuff coming out about Tom Brady, and they wanted Tom Brady to be the quarterback for the 49ers," Rice stated. "Brock is our quarterback, and I believe in him. And we're about to go into the championship game, and the way he can—all the naysayers and stuff like that—to shut them up, is for him to go and win this football game."
Rice added, "I think the thing about Brock is his composure and how he executes that offense. And he's fiery, man. He likes playing football for the San Francisco 49ers."
