Heading into last year's draft, there was much speculation about quarterback
Brock Purdy's arm strength—or perceived lack thereof. This narrative persisted even after the San Francisco 49ers selected him as the final overall pick and continued as the rookie quarterback took over the starting role due to injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.
Then, many questioned his effectiveness on deeper passes following offseason surgery to repair a torn UCL in his throwing arm.
This season, only Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence boasts a superior Pro Football Focus grade when throwing beyond 20 yards (97.4 vs. 97.2). Additionally, when targeting players beyond that mark, Purdy trails only Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud in passer rating (144.2 vs. 136.7).
During Sunday's
27-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Purdy showcased his arm strength by delivering a 76-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver
Brandon Aiyuk, marking the longest throw of his career.
Needless to say, Purdy has been phenomenal on deep passes, silencing his doubters.
"I think [Purdy's arm is] definitely stronger than what we thought it was when we drafted him, but we saw that the first day out of rookie minicamp," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday morning via a conference call. "I think when people talk about arm strength, can he sit there and take three hitches and make the wrong decision and just wait and throw 70 yards down the field? Probably not, but when do you ever want a guy to do that? On the Hail Mary, maybe?
"But you like guys who can make all the throws in the timing of the play, which is usually going by the right decisions, and when to throw it deep, when to throw it short, when to check it down, when to go over the middle. And Brock's always had the arm strength to make all those throws."
As for Purdy's overall play against the Buccaneers, it was statistical perfection. The quarterback achieved a perfect passer rating of 158.3, completing 21 of his 25 passing attempts for 333 yards and three touchdowns.
Shanahan praised his second-year quarterback, stating, "He played at a real high level, made real good decisions, was very smart with the ball, and he played like his numbers looked. It was very impressive."

"It's pretty impressive": 49ers' Kyle Shanahan unpacks Eagles' "tush push" phenomenon
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan briefly discussed the Philadelphia Eagles' "tush push" while speaking to reporters on Wednesday. In his weekly radio interview on Thursday, Shanahan delved into the Eagles' unique take on the quarterback sneak.
Philadelphia has seen a lot of success executing this popular short-yardage play. Quarterback Jalen Hurts lines up under center with multiple players behind him, taking the snap and relying on those players to push from behind, resulting in a first down more often than not.
"It's pretty good. It's pretty impressive," Shanahan said on KNBR's "Murph and Mac" show. "Other teams can do it also, but you got to give them the [credit]. One, they perfected. [They were] the first ones to do it as much as they did it, so

Kyle Shanahan's candid remarks on 49ers QB Brock Purdy's Super Bowl potential
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been impressing with his recent performances, leading all NFL quarterbacks in various categories. However, many still doubt his status among the NFL's elite. Following a dominating Thanksgiving win over the Seattle Seahawks to conclude their November slate of games, even Purdy's skeptics are beginning to acknowledge the 23-year-old's potential to lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl victory.
After Thursday's game, head coach Kyle Shanahan fielded questions from reporters, including whether he would categorize Purdy as elite and if he considers the player a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback.
Shanahan initially hesitated in his response,
Why 49ers' Brock Purdy has 'all the confidence in the world' in Brandon Aiyuk
Brock Purdy strengthened his chemistry with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk during training camp, after the San Francisco 49ers quarterback returned to practice following offseason surgery on his throwing arm.
That quarterback-receiver chemistry has only improved as the season has progressed. On Sunday, Aiyuk caught five passes for a career-high 156 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was his fourth game of the season with over 100 receiving yards.
"He's different from [WR] Deebo [Samuel]. He's different from [TE] George [Kittle]," quarterback Brock Purdy told reporters on Tuesday. "And so, sort of just taking note of that. And then B.A.'s just got length. He's got range. And so I know where he can get to and where I shouldn't throw the ball
