Brock Purdy is earning more and more respect around the NFL with each San Francisco 49ers victory. The second-year quarterback has never lost a regular-season game and hopes that streak continues on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan never shies away from an opportunity to praise his 23-year-old quarterback. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy echoed similar sentiments during a radio interview ahead of the Week 5 clash between NFC heavyweights at Levi's Stadium.
"I think the biggest thing is you can see he totally has command of the offense," McCarthy said Wednesday, per Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area. "I had a chance to see him play a lot last year. I was very impressed. His instincts, his awareness, ball placement. He's playing probably a notch above where he played last year."
The Cowboys faced Purdy and the 49ers during last season's NFC Divisional Playoff game, marking the second consecutive postseason Dallas' season ended at the hands of the Niners. It was only Purdy's seventh career start after taking over for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13.
Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals marked Purdy's ninth career regular-season start. His performance was nearly flawless, completing 20 of 21 pass attempts for 283 yards and a touchdown. Purdy, the final pick in last year's draft, is playing exceptional football. He won't be taken lightly by the Cowboys or anyone else in the NFL.
"When you look at his career, so much is made about measurables when these young men come out in the draft," McCarthy said. "But he's played high-quality football his whole life. I mean, this guy was born to play quarterback."
