The San Francisco 49ers have been impressive through their first two games of the season. Quarterback
Brock Purdy continues to win. His regular-season win streak could extend to eight games on Thursday night, with the Niners hosting the New York Giants at Levi's Stadium.
One former player who remains impressed by the 49ers' second-year quarterback is Alex Smith. Smith addressed those who question whether Purdy, the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, is for real and if the young quarterback can "take this team the distance."
"He doesn't look like Josh Allen or Justin Herbert, the guys that we want to label these premier quarterbacks in the NFL, but he's built, and it's a perfect place to be because he's an amazing facilitator of this offense," Smith said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "And what this Kyle Shanahan system asks of the quarterback—I mean, there are multiple plays called on almost every single play. So, at the line of scrimmage, you've got to get him another great play.
"Even in the run game, this run game only works because you're getting to the best look. And then, again, in the pass game, require somebody to process all that information, spit the ball out, be accurate, get the ball to your playmakers, limit turnovers. And that's what he's done.
"And on top of all of that, he's added a dimension of playmaking with his feet that I think none of us expected. I mean, this is a guy that I think is far more athletic than people give him credit for. Again, ran for over a thousand yards at Iowa State."
Smith notes that the NFC today reminds him of the conference back in the 90s when it was the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys on top, and then you had everyone else. The two teams seem destined to clash again in this season's playoffs, and fans will get a preview of the matchup in a few weeks.
"Certainly, I think you could throw Philly in that mix, but you've got kind of this big three-headed monster in the NFC," Smith continued. "These teams are built, from top to bottom, so well, and any one of them, on any given day, could beat each other. Fortunately, the Niners have gotten the Cowboys' number the last couple of years, but it seems like we're headed towards that road again."

Why Baldy sees 49ers QB Brock Purdy as a legitimate MVP candidate
NFL analyst Brian Baldinger asserts that Brock Purdy is a legitimate contender for the NFL MVP award. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has been playing at an elite level, leading the league in several statistical categories, including completion percentage (70.2), touchdown percentage (6.9), yards per attempt (9.6), yards gained per completion (13.7), and passer rating (116.1).
"If Brock Purdy keeps playing like this, I think Brock Purdy is the MVP," Baldinger said Tuesday morning on 95.7 The Game's "The Morning Roast" show.
While acknowledging that the 49ers are a perfect fit for Purdy, Baldinger dismisses the notion that San Francisco's talented roster and head coach Kyle Shanahan's system are solely responsible for Purdy's success.
"Honestly,
Omar Ruiz talks Brock Purdy respect, 49ers-Eagles showdown
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has showcased elite-level performances this season. Nevertheless, some seem reluctant to give the second-year player the respect that many 49ers fans believe he deserves.
NFL Network reporter Omar Ruiz joined KNBR on Monday morning and was asked if he senses a reluctance among the media to categorize Purdy among the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks.
"Yeah, and I think as long as he has a loaded Forty-Niner team around him, it'll probably always be like that unless he wins a Super Bowl," Ruiz responded on the "Murph and Mac" show.
Ruiz drew parallels to former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson's journey to being considered among the league's best. Initially, the team's outstanding defensive play
49ers Notebook: Deebo Samuel backs up the smack; Brock Purdy returns to scene of injury; Jauan Jennings beats his favorite team
It's not often that a player can back up copious amounts of trash talk the way Deebo Samuel did against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, but that's exactly what happened during the critical beatdown the 49ers unleashed on the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
Samuel was among multiple 49ers players who expressed confidence over the offseason that the result in last season's NFC Championship game, won 31-7 by the Eagles, would have been different had quarterback Brock Purdy not suffered a season-ending elbow injury during the contest. No one was more vocal on that front than Samuel, who said things like "We lost because we played with ten people" while adding that the
George Kittle says Brock Purdy lifts 49ers offense; Eager for Eagles game
Tight end George Kittle values the presence of Brock Purdy in the San Francisco 49ers' huddle. The quarterback has played efficiently, contributing to the team's three consecutive wins following a costly October slump.
Purdy is on track to become the first 49ers quarterback to surpass 4,000 passing yards since Jeff Garcia did so in 2000. In fact, his projected 4,437 yards would set a franchise record.
"I think I can speak for everybody on our offense, we're continually impressed with the things that Brock does all the time," Kittle told Jim Rome on Tuesday. "His consistency every single day, the relationship that he's built with all of our skilled players, all the guys that he gets the ball to, it's pretty amazing. And we all feel that [comfort] with
