The 49ers agreed to terms on a one-year deal with free agent quarterback Sam Darnold. The former first-round pick—number three overall—of the 2018 draft has had his ups and downs in his first five years in the league. Darnold has completed 1,054 of his 1,765 pass attempts for a 59.7 completion percentage throughout his career. He has thrown for 11,767 yards, 61 touchdowns, and 55 interceptions, per Pro Football Focus.
What makes Sam Darnold the perfect fit for the San Francisco 49ers?
The first thing that comes to mind is his age. Sam Darnold is 25 years old. When the 49ers mentioned looking into a veteran quarterback, most assumed their selection would be a more seasoned veteran like Andy Dalton or Marcus Mariota. Instead, the 49ers went with a young veteran in Darnold. The one thing head coach Kyle Shanahan loves to do is mold quarterbacks. Brian Griese can help shape
Trey Lance,
Brock Purdy, and the newly acquired Darnold.
The second thing that comes to mind is the contract. Darnold agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million, with $3 million guaranteed. He can earn $7 million more in incentives, per
details revealed on Tuesday. The 49ers managed to keep their quarterback's room relatively young and cheap.
The third thing is his competitiveness. Darnold played his college ball at USC. He can now put his past behind him and focus on his new venture. Darnold will have an array of weapons to complete throws on every level. Coming from a winning program at USC, the quarterback returns to California to compete for a spot on the 49ers roster. His competition is Lance and Purdy. Darnold is a competitor and will not settle for the number two or three quarterbacks on the roster.
In conclusion, Darnold seems like the perfect fit for the 49ers. He's young, cheap, and competitive. With the addition of Darnold, the 49ers' quarterbacks room will be pretty interesting once camp begins. Could this possibly cause a ripple in that room? Only time will tell.

Sam Darnold on role with 49ers: "As long as we're winning games, that's the only thing that matters"
Sam Darnold is the newest San Francisco 49ers quarterback. He joins a quarterback room that includes third-year passer Trey Lance and second-year player Brock Purdy. The Niners are Darnold's third NFL team since the New York Jets made him the No. 3 overall pick in 2018. He spent the last two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, appearing in 18 games while starting 17.
Darnold felt that signing with the 49ers was an easy decision. He's excited about the opportunity to work with head coach and play-caller Kyle Shanahan and the other 49ers coaches.
The quarterback steps into a great situation, too. San Francisco undoubtedly has the most talented roster he has ever been a part of.

Sam Darnold eager to learn from 49ers, reunite with Christian McCaffrey
It feels like Sam Darnold has been in the NFL for a while now. It isn't easy to believe that the newest San Francisco 49ers quarterback is only 25 years old, despite already starting 55 NFL games.
Darnold, speaking with 49ers team reporter Lindsey Pallares after signing his one-year deal with San Francisco, shared his eagerness to learn and continue to develop under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
"I think there's a ton of ways [for me] to grow and develop," Darnold said, "just by getting tons and tons of reps throughout practice and being able to watch film, sit down with Kyle, sit down with [quarterback coach Brian] Griese and the other quarterbacks, Trey [Lance] and Brock [Purdy]; just to be
49ers add depth with Clelin Ferrell signing, a perfect fit for Kris Kocurek's D-line
The 49ers agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the former first-round pick of the 2019 draft, defensive end Clelin Ferrell. Ferrell finished the 2022 season with the Raiders. The 49ers add some depth to their front line, particularly as an edge rusher. With the departures of Charles Omenihu (Chiefs), Samson Ebukam (Colts), Jordan Willis (free agent), and Kerry Hyder Jr. (free agent), Clelin Ferrell gives the
Why the 49ers checked the boxes for DE Clelin Ferrell
The San Francisco 49ers have to be an ideal landing spot for any player. The team has been to the NFC Championship three times and made a Super Bowl appearance in the last four seasons. For one free-agent defensive lineman, the Niners checked a lot of boxes.
"I think for me, I really just fell in love with the way that they play defense here," Clelin Ferrell said on Thursday, speaking with 49ers reporters for the first time.
Defensive line coach Kris Kocurek was a big draw too. Knowing the coach's background and success in bringing out the best in his players contributed to the decision to sign with the 49ers.
Ferrell added, "So it was just kind of checking that box, for sure."
The 49ers weren't the only team expressing strong interest
