Per Pro Football Focus, Herndon played 300 of his 572 defensive snaps at the slot cornerback position in 2022. The 49ers are expected to lose defensive back Jimmie Ward in free agency. Ward was the team's primary nickel cornerback.

He registered 36 tackles, two tackles for a loss, a quarterback hit, five passes defensed, and a forced fumble through 15 game appearances (one start) with the Jaguars last season, per Pro Football Reference.
