For a moment, NFL legend and Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana considered heading to the Canadian Football League. OK, he probably didn't strongly consider it. However, meetings were held, and a famous actor tried recruiting him.
Everyone knows the famous "Hey look, it's John Candy" moment in Super Bowl XXIII, defusing tension in the San Francisco 49ers huddle before the offensive went on a 92-yard game-winning drive in the final minutes to beat the Cincinnati Bengals.
A couple of years later, Candy became part of an ownership group to purchase the Toronto Argonauts. It was Candy who tried to recruit Montana to join his football team.
"My contract was up, and he was one of the owners of the Toronto Argonauts," Montana shared with Rich Eisen on Wednesday. "He was trying to get me to go to Canada."
Montana added while laughing, "They just didn't have enough money."
What if they had? Eisen asked Montana how far those discussions actually went.
"Yeah, we had a couple of meetings about it," Montana shared.
Soon after, Montana's time with the 49ers came to an end. The team traded him to the Kansas City Chiefs on April 20, 1993. The NFL great played two more seasons for the Chiefs, twice leading the team to the postseason, and reaching the AFC Championship Game in his first year with Kansas City.
